CHAPTER EIGHT

They crawled under the covers, and cuddling closely they slept, catching up on the much-needed rest after the very late night they’d had. It was Connor who woke first, and glancing at the clock he saw it was almost one-o’clock. Yawning, he thought about the happy Christmas he’d soon be celebrating with his closest friends. He’d made them a rum-laced yellow cake, and the gifts were in boxes waiting to be loaded into the car. Gazing down at his new found love he let out a sigh of wonder. The fact that they had found each other over Christmas validated his belief that they were meant to be, that their union was blessed, and while he hated that she had suffered at the hands of the bizarre Churchill family, it was her escape from their clutches that had brought them together.

“Strange,” he muttered. “So strange.”

Slipping softly from the bed he padded across the room and looked out his window towards the neighbor’s sprawling acreage behind his fence line. It was badly overgrown, but being such a mess it helped the price. He had already envisioned where the riding rings would be, both the covered arena and the outdoor ring, and where he would add a second, smaller barn.

His tavern now carried serious value and he owned it outright, and as much as he was loathe to give it up, the money from the sale would finance the purchase of the land and many of the improvements. It was a matter of finding the right buyer at the right time. His neighbor, Bill Carter, had told him he would probably put the land on the market at the beginning of the year. That was just around the corner. Connor knew land didn’t sell fast, especially in the middle of winter, but selling the tavern would take a while as well. He didn’t want a bridge loan, and he didn’t want the weight of carrying two properties, so his dream was dependent on perfect timing.

“You brought April into my life,” he murmured lifting his eyes to the sky, “and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Can you now please show me the way forward to my horse ranch?”

“Who are you talking to?”

Turning around he saw April was awake and propped up on an elbow.

“The Christmas fairy,” he grinned walking towards her.

“You believe in the Christmas fairy?” she giggled as he slipped back into bed.

“Hey, she brought you into my life, didn’t she?”

“Maybe it was the Good Lord,” she said raising her eyebrows.

“Maybe it was, but I just asked for help with my future plans.”

“You mean getting the land and building your ranch?”

“Yep, and speakin’ of ranches, we’ve got a few minutes before we have to get out of this bed. Tell me about your ridin’, and April, what do you do? I mean, do you have a career? What’s your story, darlin’?”

“Um, well, my riding and my career go hand-in-hand. I’m a horse appraiser.”

“You’re a what?”

“A horse appraiser.”

“No kiddin’.
